volunteer tradesmen information
Who are we?
The charity TEECH focuses on improving the lives of children, the elderly and the local communities in villages/towns in Moldova, Eastern Europe (and previously Romania). In Moldova it is the ‘norm’ for people to use outdoor long drop style toilets but we believe they deserve more, especially as we are in the 21st Century and these people are only a stone’s throw away from the UK.
Each summer projects last two weeks. We travel (overland) to Moldova with a team of volunteers, including drivers and tradesmen, to install toilets, urinals, sinks, hot and cold running water, showers and all the trimmings related to installing bathrooms into buildings.
What are we doing in 2022?
From the 13th to 28th August 2022 a team of volunteers will be installing bathrooms into a school in a small village in Moldova. As it takes 3.5 days to travel each way to the village from the UK we only have 8 days on site to complete the work therefore it is always a challenge but very rewarding.
We will be transforming rooms in the school into bathrooms, for the boys and girls.
Tasks usually involve:
Carpenters will be involved in - fitting toilet cubicles, making good doorways and general woodwork as required.
Electricians will be ensuring there is sufficient lighting in both rooms (lights currently exist but may need changing/re positioning) and wiring for water heaters and hand driers.
Plumbers will be installing toilets, sinks, urinals, after connecting to the water supply and drainage.
Other work involves, tiling the walls, putting lino on the floor, painting the walls (including murals), plastering and making good.
Why do we need you?
We require carpenters, electricians and plumbers to volunteer their time to help to plan and actually carry out the project. A number of volunteers have limited ‘trade’ skills but are all very hands on and get a lot out of working with tradesmen to get the project completed, as well as learning a few new skills themselves.
The charity requires all volunteers (including tradesmen) to fund their own expenses and to contribute towards the cost of the actual project (supplies) which is £800 (£600 expenses/£200 project). We understand that most tradesmen are self employed and these costs can be a stretch. Please make contact so we can offer support with helping you to fund raise these costs before you decide this is too much to contemplate.
How else can you help?
If you are unable to make the trip but would still like to help and support the project then you can support us in sourcing supplies, for example sanitary ware, as well as tiles, paint, paint brushes, rollers.......etc
