project success in hasnasenii noi
The team travelled overland, to the village in the northern part of Moldova, with the aim to create bathrooms for the boys and girls of the school. The school was functioning with just an outside, long drop, style toilet meaning the children had no privacy or hygienic conditions in which to use the bathroom in summer or winter. Two classrooms within the school were converted into brand new bathrooms, providing for the first time, hot and cold running water, toilets with cubicle partitions, hand driers and a urinal for the boys. The picture above shows the finished girls bathroom, including murals created and painted by volunteers.
Outside the team installed a septic tank for the waste water (see picture below). Current long drop toilets are just holes over the bare ground, therefore the tank would provide containment for waste, meaning the grounds of the school and sounding area (homes and gardens) would be protected from pollution. The septic tank was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ipswich and all outside waste pipe work and fittings provided free of charge by Aliaxis Ltd
Lino flooring was laid within the bathrooms (improving their current wooden flooring) and further flooring left at the school for the kitchen and dining room to be improved, before the children return to school. The flooring was provided by Altro Ltd and F Ball Ltd provided the floor adhesive (both free of charge) to ensure we have the right tools for the job.
In the school library the team divided the room into two, using partitioning from J Gard and Sons, providing the school with two rooms which they will utilise for teaching (replacing the space taken by the bathrooms).
Hallways and bathrooms were tiled and decorated and young Sergiu from Moldova added murals to the walls to brighten it all up for the children. TEECH were joined by six superb Moldovan volunteers for this summers trip, Sergiu, Iulia, Vlad, Diana, Dorina and Macrina. All worked really hard, providing translation to the highest quality for the whole team throughout the whole trip.
The Director of the school Natalia and the mayor Roman were both actively engage in the project, visiting the school daily and seeing progress, along with helping to obtain a digger for the outside works and any other requests we made to them.
The village hall was used as the free shop, providing food (thank you to Pratap and Jay and many friends for the large food donation - picture below) and clothing to those in need. A smaller team of volunteers opened the shops for 4 days and supported families as they came in to choose the items that they required. Over 700 boxes of clothing were taken to Moldova, therefore we would like to thank those who generously donated items for the shop, putting a smile on many locals faces along with toys for the children.
During the week, smaller volunteer teams took turns to visit an older persons home, rehabilitation centre, two hospitals and a couple of other villages to provide medical supplies, walking aids, wheelchairs, clothing and food.
TEECH would like to thank all those who supported the project, especially suppliers and donators providing discount or items free of charge. A list of those suppliers can be viewed here.
All of the above was completed in just 9 days in Moldova. Many challenges faced the team this year, including 3 vehicle punctures and delayed entry into the country but the project was a huge success and everything was achieved.

The siblings Susanne and Danne Stattin travelled from Sweden to be part of the TEECH project in Hasnasenii Noi. With 1000 kg of aid gathered from friends and families they drove over 5600 km in a VW-sponsored van. The article from the local paper shown below in Södertälje tells about the preparations for the trip and all efforts to bring the aid to Moldova. It also tells about the TEECH project on site at the school. Excellent for them to get such good publicity.
