"Travelling to Eastern Europe to help improve the lives of others"

baccealia, moldova project
june to august 2020

Welcome to the story of and pictures from the 2020 project in the village of Baccealia, Moldova.

Due to the virus pandemic, the usual volunteer trip to Moldova could not go ahead in August 2020, therefore TEECH and supporters have funded the bathroom project at the village school and the work was undertaken by the Mayor, Director and Romeo Cucireav with local labour.

Work at the school started mid June, with the school/Mayor funding the connection of sewerage pipes and running water to the school. Work has progressed to timescale, through July and August, and are now ready for the children to return to school on 1st September.

Below are photos from the project which are now complete.

Thanks in particular goes to a few volunteers who have been key fundraisers for this project: Ann Smith, Joe Pickwell-Smith and Andy Fitt, who have been bin cleaning and making masks in their communities.

Letters from the Mayor and school director

The following two letters (translated into English) are from the Mayor of the Baccealia community and the Director of the school, to express the difference creating these bathrooms will have on the pupils and the community as a whole.
Letter of intent from the Mayor of Baccealia, Causeni District, Moldova.
For the attention of Charity Organization "TEECH", United Kingdom
The population of Baccealia Community, Causeni district is 2092 inhabitants, but most of them are working abroad, leaving their children and elderly parents at home. As a rule, the grandparents take care for the children. In this situation, the school has an essentially important role in educating the young generation.
The evolution of the state of health of the population and the way of organising the protection of health are closely related to the medical-social problem of the population. The school can contribute to the healthy development of students by ensuring a favorable environment for health and education. It can be ensured by the offering bathrooms, which will raise the level of sanitary culture and behavior of the population. Children come from families with different education and culture level, and by forming the correct life skills in pupils we will also change the attitude of elder people to the health problems.
The sanitary-hygienic conditions existing in our school do not correspond to the sanitary norms and legislation. For these reasons we addressed our request to the Charity Organisation "TEECH", United Kingdom, to contribute to the improvement of the sanitary facilities in our institution.
Our community will have the following benefits from this project:
  1. Healthy children thanks to improved sanitary conditions
  2. Hygiene conditions will be a priority
  3. It is important, that pupils have healthy living habits and understand the health risks, if hygiene is not respected.
  4. The pupils will have facilities to wash their hands.
  5. As a result, many diseases caused by unwashed hands will disappear.
  6. Up to 80% of infectious diseases will be prevented if hygiene will be kept.
  7. Many generations of pupils will benefit from good sanitary conditions.
On behalf of Mayor House of Community Baccealia and citizens, I express my sincere thanks to the Charity Organisation "TEECH", sponsors, volunteers, and donors for the possibility to implement this sanitary project beneficial for the whole Commune.
With great respect,
Mayor of Baccealia Community,
Nenov Claudia

Letter of Intent from the Director of the School.
In attention of Charity Organisation "TEECH", United Kingdom
168 children from 3 villages of Baccealia, Plop and Florica, which form Community of Baccealia, are learning at the "Grigore Vieru" Gymnasium, School. There are also 33 employees at our school. Of them, 30 children and 2 employees suffer from different diseases and various degrees of disability.
The existing sanitary conditions do not meet the norms and legislation in force, for these reasons we address our request to the Charity Organisation "TEECH", United Kingdom, to contribute to the improvement of the sanitary facilities in our institution.
This project will change the attitude of pupils, employers towards the best interests of the child, guaranteeing the principle of fair treatment for everyone.
The project will help strengthen the pupils’ health, reducing the number of illnesses and accidents frequently encountered during the winter, offering accessible conditions to the needs of people with disabilities, respecting the privacy and safety of each pupil.
The pupils will benefit from hygienic conditions as warm water, soap, toilet paper, mirrors, separate toilet cubicles, thus cultivating the symbol of accurateness and hygiene.
Pupils and parents will be instructed on the importance of respecting personal hygiene and correct use of the bathrooms.
On behalf of the Gymnasium Administration and all our pupils I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Charity Organisation "TEECH", to the sponsors, volunteers and donors for the possibility to implement this sanitary project beneficial as well for our institution as for the entire Commune.
With great respect,
Director of the "Grigore Vieru" Gymnasium, v. Baccealia, d. Causeni,
Elena Tibirna

Message from romeo cucireav as project manager

"It is for the first time in the last 12 years that volunteers of Charity Organisation TEECH  can't come to Moldova due to COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions caused by it. This year the target project was the School of Baccealia, district Causeni, where TEECH aimed to improve sanitary and hygiene facilities by performing completely new bathrooms within the school. In spite of all facts TEECH decision was to implement the project anyway using local manpower and infrastructure. As I've been working with TEECH for more than 12 years chairman Rob Brown asked me to perform the works with my team and cooperate with local authorities as they also are contributing to this project.
I'm proud to be part of TEECH Family and of this important and useful project for the pupils of Baccealia community, who will benefit from modern sanitary facilities inside the school.
I'm proud to implement this project in my native country Moldova, thanks cooperation with TEECH"
Romeo
