TEECH convoy in Romania 2023
hgv and pSv volunteer drivers information
Who are we?
The charity TEECH focuses on improving the lives of children, the elderly and the local communities in villages/towns in Moldova, Eastern Europe (and previously Romania). In Moldova it is the ‘norm’ for people to use outdoor long drop style toilets but we believe they deserve more, especially as we are in the 21st Century and these people are only a stone’s throw away from the UK.
Each summer we travel (overland) to Moldova with a team of volunteers, drivers and tradesmen, over two weeks to install toilets, urinals, sinks, hot and cold running water, showers and all the trimmings related to installing bathrooms
into buildings.
What are we doing in 2024?
From the 8th to 25th August 2024 a team of volunteers will be installing bathrooms into two schools, in the villages of Bursuceni and Moara de Piatra, Moldova. As it takes 3.5 days to travel each way to the village from the UK we only have 9 days on site to complete the work, therefore it is always a challenge but very rewarding. We will be transforming two rooms in the school into two bathrooms, one for the boys and one for the girls.
Why do we need you?
On the trip we aim to take two articulated lorries, plus a sprinter van and mini bus or coach. We require volunteer drivers with HGV and PSV licences to come on board and help get us to our destination and back again.
The drive across Europe takes us from England and then through France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania and into Moldova.
The lorry drivers will leave the UK on Thursday 8th August 2024 due to driving laws in Europe restricting driving on Sundays. Therefore the lorries and van will arrive in Moldova on Sunday 11th August when they will have to travel to the second largest city of Balti to pass customs before moving onto the village where the project will take place. Along the way there are many driving rules to follow including having breaks as the law requires and buying vignettes for the vehicles. If you decide to volunteer then talking to one of our experienced drivers will provide you with all the knowledge and support you require for the journey.
The mini bus will leave the UK early on Saturday 10th August with the rest of the volunteers arriving on Tuesday 13th August.
Once on location all drivers get involved in being part of the bigger team and the project. On the journey home all four vehicles travel in convoy.
The charity requires all volunteers (including drivers) to fund their own expenses and to contribute towards the cost of the actual project (supplies) which is a total of £500 for drivers (£200 expenses/£300 project). Please make contact so we can offer support with helping you to fund raise these costs before you decide this is too much to contemplate.
