2012 Project - Valcinet, Moldova.
From 11th – 25th August 2012 TEECH returned to Moldova to a school in Valcinet, a small town in the middle/west of the country.
The school had no indoor toilets for the upper school children therefore this project really did benefit many lives.
Over seven days on site, the charity completed the following work:
Created a girls toilet by:
- digging up an unsuitable and uneven floor (concrete) and re-laying a concrete floor
- plaster boarding the walls of the room and tiling behind where the toilets were installed and behind the sinks
- creating the drainage for the new toilets and sinks through the floor and out through the building’s cellar
- installing four toilets and four sinks
- laying lino flooring
- putting in toilet partitions to provide privacy (which children do not experience normally due to their long drop outside
toilets)
- replacing the door to the room with a new more suitable door (previously a barn style door)
- installing hand driers (therefore running electricity into the room)
- upgrading the lighting from one bulb in the ceiling to a strip light
Created a boys toilet by:
- boring through a wall to install drainage for the new toilets and sinks
- painting the walls (including murals)
- tiling behind where the toilets were installed and behind the sinks
- installing three toilets, three urinals and two sinks
- putting in toilet partitions to provide privacy
- installing hand driers (therefore running electricity into the room)
- laying lino flooring
- upgrading the lighting from one bulb in the ceiling to a strip light
The Kitchen:
The kitchen was functional when TEECH visited the school but needed upgrading therefore the charity installed two new double sinks (including the plumbing for the sinks); provided a new industrial cooker and new pots/pans/crockery and cutlery and a fridge and separate freezer.
The dining room was painted and lino flooring laid in the dining room preparation room. A cloakroom just off the dining room was upgraded with new sinks and hand driers to enable the children to wash their hands prior to meals.
Many areas of the school were also painted and murals added by volunteers to brighten up the school for the children.
All this work was carried out in just 7 days with a team of 25 volunteers.
As in previous years the TEECH volunteers camped out in a few of the class rooms so an air bed and pillow were essential for the trip. Our chef took over the schools kitchen and provided nourishing meals to keep the volunteers fueled whilst taking on the jobs at the school.
Please take time to watch the video below, this will show you the sort of things we get up to. This video shows how the project started and what we got up to.
Enjoy!
